Why nanny hiring in urban India is broken

Finding someone to look after an infant is one of the harder weeks for a dual-income household in Gurgaon, Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, or Bengaluru. The same stories show up in parenting forums and on review sites: a fee paid in advance, a nanny who does not last, and a bureau that goes quiet when you call.

The fee is taken, and the replacement never comes

Parents describe placement desks that collect a large sum up front, often somewhere between ₹10,000 and ₹25,000, and promise an instant replacement if the person leaves. After the payment, the follow-up slows down. A substitute arrives who has not looked after a baby. Or the phone stops being answered. The family has paid for a search that ended on joining day.

Mondays, paydays, and people who disappear

The other regular complaint is absence with no warning. A Monday after salary. The day after a long festival break. A parent is already on the road to Cyber City or a South Delhi office, and the flat is empty. Advances make it worse: money is taken, then the person does not return, and there is no handover of the baby’s feeds, naps, or medicines.

A phone in one hand and a bottle in the other

Families who check a camera at home often see the same scene. The nanny is on a video call, or scrolling, while an infant is in her lap or being fed. That is a fall risk, and it is also a day with no talking and no eye contact. Parents are not asking for a performance. They want the awake hours spent with the child.

A housekeeper given a nanny label

Bureaus often send a general housemaid and call her a baby nanny. Nobody has asked whether she can sterilise a bottle, burp a newborn, keep a simple nap rhythm, or what she would do if the baby choked or ran a fever. Those are the skills that matter in the first year. Sweeping the hall is a different job.

Every day becomes a negotiation

Without a written list of duties, the work drifts. One person refuses baby laundry and bottle prep. Another fills the day with mopping so she can avoid sitting with a fussy infant. Both outcomes come from the same gap: nobody agreed, before joining, what the job is and what it is not.
